Nancy Friedemann-Sánchez is a Colombo-American, mid-career artist with an interdisciplinary practice. She grew up in Colombia as the child of a Colombian and a United States citizen and migrated to the US as an adult. Her art is about the curious and intense experience of having physically migrated while still having a piece of herself rooted in Colombia. She is creating an intersectional feminist visual novel that is a multifaceted project comprised of paintings, sculptures, objects, and mixed media that together weave a synchronicity of dialogues, passages, and punctuations about hybridity and cultural ownership.

Angelina Gutierrez is a self-taught, visionary Latina artist who works primarily in acrylic, spray paint, and mixed media. The bulk of her work lay in “imagined portraits” that blend elements of realism, symbolism, and dreamscape. Her faces— often wide-eyed, full mouthed, and layered with texture, color, and bold marks—are rooted in a desire to represent the unseen forces that surround and protect us. Many of her portraits double as symbolic family totems—figures that seem to watch over, hold space, and speak messages of strength to us within their forms. Her work stands as a testament to the the ways in which art can become a vessel for healing, a force of protection, and a vehicle for human connection. Viewers and collectors of Anglina’s work highlight their wonderment in her innovative depictions of the human form as well as in her ability to create joy and a sense of refuge in her deeply soulful creations.

Recent Works: “Echos of Eden”

In her bold and evocative new body of work, this visionary artist delves into the tangled intersections of religion, mythology, sexuality, and loneliness, crafting a deeply personal and interpretative dialogue with sacred texts. Drawing on stories from the Bible, Angelina reimagines familiar narratives through a modernist lens—fragmented, symbolic, and emotionally charged. Her compositions disrupt traditional iconography, instead placing vulnerable, often sensual figures in surreal, dreamlike spaces that speak to isolation and yearning. The result is a series of works that challenge orthodoxy while honoring the emotional and spiritual weight of the source material.

Over the course of his Artist Residency, Paul High Horse worked with the staff at the Castle, planning monthly community outreach activities while creating a new body of work to be shown at the Joslyn Castle Carriage House.

Paul High Horse is a member of the Sicangu (Sičháŋǧu) Lakota tribe. Son of a Lakota father and Italian mother, Paul was born in New Jersey; however, at the age of three, his parents moved to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota so Paul and his siblings could be immersed in their native culture. He lived on the reservation until he left to attend college at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Paul’s artistic philosophy incorporates a modern approach to communicate a rich historical context of the Lakota people. His art captures the symbols, traditions, and values inherent to the Lakota tribe. His work also explores different media including acrylics, archival pens, watercolor, and ledger paper. Paul currently teaches 7-12th grade art at Fort Calhoun Community School in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska.
